Moxa embedded computing success stories
Moxa's embedded computing division has grown dramatically in recent years. To help you better
understand the applications and solutions of embedded computers, we selected 8 representative
success stories from different vertical markets and countries all over the world for a new interactive
Flash Demo. These success stories include environmental monitoring, power automation, FAB management, solar
energy, factory automation, and security.
Broad line of combustion efficiency and emissions monitors
The product lines and resources of two industry leaders in combustion and environmental monitoring
now are available from AMETEK Process & Analytical Instruments - AMETEK Thermox® and Land Instruments.
AMETEK Thermox offers the process industry's most extensive line of flue gas analysers for
measuring oxygen, combustibles, methane and fuel-rich atmospheres. Its WDG-IVC combined Oxygen and
Combustibles analysers, for example, are a superior alternative to in-situ probes, even in heavy
particulate and high-temperature flue gas streams.
Land Instruments, acquired by AMETEK in 2006, offers a comprehensive range of combustion
efficiency and environmental monitoring instruments, including the FGA Series of flue gas analysers.
Solutions for industrial communications
At Hirschmann (Stand #1523), you will find Belden's wide array of industrial cabling solutions, as
well as Hirschmaann's wide range of solutions for Industrial Ethernet, factory floor connectivity,
and process equipment automation and control.
Firewalls, ISA-S99 Standards and Plant Floor Security -
Eric Byres of Byers Security set up a demonstration with laptops configured as HMIs controlling a
live PLC. The PLC controlled a pump, which, in turn, controlled flow into a pretend chemical
blending system visualized on a screen in the room. He then plugged a common thumb-sized USB key
device into the PLC's network. The HSB contained "hacker" software (written in less than a day by a
Byres Security employee) that prevented the HMI student "operators" in the room from knowing what
was going on and, eventually, it crashed the controller. His company then unveiled a network
protection device being marketed through MTL Instruments. Called the Tofino Modbus TCP Enforcer Loadable
Security Module (LSM), the module performs detailed analysis and filtering of all Modbus TCP
messages. The device uses technology based on the still-evolving ISA99 plant security standard.

Open path gas detectors
eliminate false alarms
An industry first, Senscient's new
ELDS Series Open Path Gas Detectors (OPGDs) feature truly false-alarm free
flammable and toxic gas detection. ELDS gas detectors, scheduled to begin
shipping in the first quarter of 2009, solve a problem common in the oil and gas
industry: unreliable readings causing false alarms that cost millions of dollars
in lost revenue annually. Safety systems triggered by the detection of potentially hazardous gases typically shut down processes and facilities to prevent
catastrophy. But when a false alarm triggers the system, productivity is lost
while the alarm origin is investigated, false alarm status is verified, and pro-
cesses are slowly brought back on line. More...
