New functionality, live demonstrations, dedicated workshop
The AS-Interface Expert Alliance will have several working demonstrations on display, showing functionality for AS-Interface in areas such as conveyors, pneumatics, panel switches, indicators and drives. The new Version 3 AS-Interface specification will be promoted in the Industrial Networks workshops running during the show. Another new technology, AS-I SW, designed for networking very low-level devices such as Panel Switches and Indicators, will also receive its debut during the AS-I workshop.

New clamp meter series features built-in non-contact infrared thermometer
Extech Instruments, one of the world's largest suppliers of test equipment and portable printers, announces its new series of 1000A and 800A clamp meters. Each 1000A clamp features a unique, built-in, non-contact InfraRed thermometer with laser pointer to monitor temperature and locate hot spots on motors and electrical devices. Each 1000A meter features Min/Max, a Data Hold feature that "freezes" the data in the display, and an auto ranging feature with a manual range override.
Jerry Blakeley, President of Extech Instruments will be at mtec on both days.


Total capability in sensors
Transducer solutions specialists RDP Electronics (celebrating 40 years of research, development and manufacture during 2006), will be showing the latest developments in sensor technology at MTEC 2006. Offering a comprehensive range of transducers, instrumentation and measurement software, RDP are specialists in providing cost effective solutions to a broad range of measurement needs, right from the point of measurement through to PC display of data.
Advanced signal multi-scanner launched
Ametek Calibration Instruments is launching a new Advanced Signal Multi-scanner (ASM). The JOFRA ASM800 series provides an automatic solution for the calibration of up to 8 temperature sensors. By stacking up to 3 ASM800s, as many as 24 sensors can be calibrated simultaneously. The ASM800 is PC-controlled using JOFRACAL software and it is fully compatible with all Jofra Temperature Calibrators. The ASM800 series is designed for use in all applications where temperature measurement is critical and/or there is a need for the calibration to have a traceable record.

The ISA England section will be offering a series of presentations based around safety and communications. The titles are :

    Uncooled infrared detection
    ULIS, a leading European producer of low-cost infrared detectors for thermal imagery, has launched the UL 04 05 1 - its latest, third-generation, uncooled microbolometer detector, which operates at room temperature. They will be at IPOT. The new 25micro m-pitch, 640 x 480 pixel focal plane array has a spectral response of 8µm to 14µm. It is perfect for low-cost thermal imagery with a high spatial resolution for both defence applications and civilian use, especially in medicine.
    New robust Hall effect rotary sensor launched
    SRH880Penny + Giles launches its new robust rotary position sensor SRH880. With a 88mm diameter housing and 12mm diameter shaft, SRH880 is the largest non-contact Hall effect rotary sensor in their industrial range, providing OEMs with reliable measurement for heavy duty agricultural and utility vehicles. Unlike potentiometric sensors, the sensor can operate in high dither vibration conditions with no deterioration of the sensing element. It is not susceptible to shock and vibration, making it ideal for steering position monitoring and hydraulic lifting systems on off-highway vehicles. It is also available with an optional stainless steel housing for applications in offshore, marine, steel production and power generation environments, and has a protection rating to IP68M.
    Lamerholm ShockLog Locator launched
    Lamerholm Electronics will be launching the latest addition to its ShockLog range of electronic impact, vibration and environmental monitoring devices on stand D75 at mtec. The new ShockLog Locator enables users to track their consignments using GPS positioning for identifying the location of a shipment and GSM communications for immediate notification of any significant events that may occur, via SMS messaging. As part of the Lamerholm Group, Jekyll Electronic Technology will be showing the new Telelog, a simple, maintenance free method of remote monitoring and data logging for a wide range of process applications including flow and level measurement.
    In addition to the new ShockLog Locator, Lamerholm will be showing other products in the ShockLog range.
    Techniques for fault-finding and maintenance of plant equipment over PROFIBUS.
    The PROFIBUS Group will be participating by presenting a short session in the Technology Centre in Industrial Networks - for Fieldbus and Open Systems
    Synopsis: The economic benefits of PROFIBUS are widely known and accepted across a wide range of industries, however these benefits extend far beyond savings in installation costs. This presentation overviews techniques that are available for fault-finding and predictive maintenance on operational PROFIBUS systems. The presentation will include a live demonstration of modern fault-finding tools on a working PROFIBUS network.
    Presenter: Andy Verwer, Principal Lecturer, Automation Systems Centre, Department of Engineering and Technology Manchester Metropolitan University. Andy runs the Automation Systems Centre at Manchester Metropolitan University which is the UK's registered PROFIBUS Competency Centre.
    The PROFIBUS Group will also be participating in the exhibition with a new multi-vendor demonstration system designed, built and operated by the team from the PROFIBUS Competence Centre at MMU.

    New division featured industrial networking solutions
    The Harting Technology Group featured its new Industrial Communications & Power Networks Division. The new division builds on Harting's established expertise in industrial interconnection systems to provide a complete range of solutions for communications and control in the industrial environment, with particular emphasis on Industrial Ethernet.

    Retired company director treks Iceland's volcanic terrain in aid of Alzheimer's Society.
    And now for somthing completely different! Spectacular views of wild, volcanic landscape will unfold before a retired company director from Basingstoke as he takes on the land of fire and ice in a fantastic fundraising challenge in aid of the Alzheimer's Society. Malcolm Read, retired MD of Ixthus Instrumentation Limited, will be one of more than forty intrepid trekkers who will experience the beauty of Iceland as part of a nine-day adventure in July 2006 and starting at Mount Hekla (left). Malcolm, who is well known for his experience in the Sensors industry, has undergone recent surgery for hip and knee replacement, and now fit again. Malcolm will be on stand D173 at the show.


    New torque sensor to revolutionise machine control -
    Torque measuring specialist Sensor Technology will be displaying on their stand D20 their complete range of TorqSense transducers and TorqView2, a complementary software programme that generates a visual instrumentation display of the TorqSense output. It measures the characteristics of rotating shafts in real time, including torques, speed, power and positional angle, using a non-contact technique that has redefined the ease and accuracy with which such data can be collected. TorqView2 lets the data generated be displayed on a full-sized screen, in a variety of graphical and textural forms, as well as collecting and analysing it.
    VA and other flowmeters on Roxspur stand
    Roxspur M+C show the latest Platon NGX and LGX variable area flowmeters, alongside Brearley temperature and Sensit pressure sensors. The full Roxspur range will be on display and engineers will be on hand to discuss their applications.
    Tekscan Pressure Mapping
    Analogue & Digital Services, UK agent for Tekscan over the past eight years, will be showing the latest in pressure mapping technology. With the ability to visualize, record, measure and analyse the pressure distribution between any two surfaces, and with applications that range from body pressure to heavy engineering measurements, the Tekscan systems are invaluable to any user wishing to examine the way contact pressure is distributed.

    LFPlus For Medical Device Testing
    Lloyd Instruments will be showing three of the highly popular LFPlus low force single column materials testing instruments at MDT 2006, each equipped with NEXYGEN MT control and analysis software, incorporating powerful security and audit trails to help companies meet FDA 21 CFR Part 11 regulations.     Vision seminars
    The UK Industrial Vision Association (UKIVA) usually runs a series of free seminars at the Machine Vision 2006 (concurrent show), but at this particular show presents a seminar itself. As part of a seminar programme entitled "Recent Advances in Imaging For Industry". UKIVA director, Don Braggins will make a presentation on "Why vision has become more robust in the 21st Century".
    Industrial Applications of Strain and Deformation Measurement
    The British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM) will be holding a series of seminars entitled 'Industrial Applications of Strain and Deformation Measurement". Topics covered during the seminars will include:

    The Sensors Forum at Mtec 2006
    Sponsored by the DTI (British Dept of Trade and Industry) the Sensors Forum aims to facilitate and encourage the flow of knowledge and experience between researchers and UK industry. The free workshops will be held on the second day of Mtec 2006 (Thursday 16th February). The Sensors Forum will draw together the public activities of existing networks and clubs and stimulate the formation of new online communities and interest groups.
