mtec2005 - Review

16 February 2005 - 17 February 2005

The only national British event devoted entirely to instrumentation and sensors.

'Mtec 2004 was also a huge success for the exhibitors, with "Quality of people was absolutely spot-on, very few time wasters" from Don Findlay, DSP Design and "Once again a success - people who visited our stand had genuine interest" from Chris Jones, Micro-Epsilon.'

"Best show we have done in many years"
(Andy Rendell-Read, VBC Automation)

Water monitoring sensor aids world water resource management
The 9500 series of pressure transducers from Gems Sensors has been designed specifically to meet the rigorous conditions and accuracy requirements oP hydrometric applications such as ground water monitoring. In addition the 9500 series can be used to replace mercury manometers, which represent a health hazard, and also shaft encoders where they are being used for level measurement. Use of the 9500 series, with its simple installation and calibration,, could save around €1500.00 per site in commissioning costs whilst delivering the same performance.

The Ethernet motion revolution -
Baldor demonstrated the potential of the Ethernet Powerlink protocol for machinery builders with a 12-axis system performing interpolated real-time motion control. At the heart of the demonstration is an Ethernet Poxverlink equipped variant of the successful MicroFlex single-axis drive, Baldor's lean-and-smart drive concept that is now installed in hundreds of systems around the globe.

Software speeds machine vision with advanced algorithms
National Instruments announced the NI Vision 7.1 Development Module, which features hundreds of vision tools for engineers and scientists using NI LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, C/C++ or Visual Basic to create powerful vision applications that inspect, align, identify and measure objects. With the software, engineers and scientists can access new algorithms such as geometric matching, object classification, optical character recognition (OCR) and 2D bar code readers to quickly locate, sort and track objects even under poor imaging conditions.

Collecting, collating and presenting data
The ISA England Section is supporting MTEC 2005 with a set of presentations on the challenges in collecting, collating and presenting data from wide spread and disparate sources. The sources of data might be unattended and remote monitoring instruments measuring the environment or a part of a process or they might be goods in transit in a supply chain.

Pocket PC makes splash!
Hampshire based C-Cubed is set to make a big splash at MTEC 2005 (NEC, Feb 16-18) with its range of portable data acquisition products including the new extremely rugged and waterproof Recon IP67 Pocket PC. C-Cubed is very excited to be a UK distributor of this full-spec WindowsTM machine that has literally been made to work underwater.
In conjunction with the Recon Pocket PC, C-Cubed will be demonstrating the world's first Compact Flash data acquisition card, the Dataq-CF2, in a variety of handheld applications including a torque analyser, laboratory equipment controller, pH meter, vibration analyser and DVM.

New developments in hydrogen leak detection
Sensistor Technologies attends for the first time with its range of instruments based on the hydrogen method. Leak detection using hydrogen in a safe mixture of 5% hydrogen in nitrogen - offers many benefits: hydrogen is the cheapest tracer gas available, and is the lightest and least viscous of all gases. It spreads very quickly throughout the test object and seeps quickly through the smallest leak. Background interference is easily minimised because of the speed with which it dissipates. The method requires no pumps or vacuum and thus needs a minimum of maintenance.

The most advanced hydrocarbon dew-point analyser
The launch of Condumax II marks the climax of a three year development programme to enhance the existing Condumax and create the most advanced hydrocarbon dew-point analyser available today. Extensive customer research pin-pointed the areas where the original Condumax could benefit from improvement, and new technologies have given Michell the opportunity to incorporate exciting new features in an instrument that is simple to install and operate.

Blistering performance at 1 Gigabit per second!
Hirschmann Electronics introduced the new GigaBit Power Mice. Awesome speed and performance is now within reach. Designed specially for use in rough industrial environments, this switch unit with integral backplane and a four-port Gigabit media module, matching SFP fibre-optic transceivers and various Fast Ethernet media modules really can deliver for industrial applications.

Latest embedded control products and applications
Micro-Robotics, the Cambridge based manufacturer of custom and off-the-shelf embedded control solutions showed practical applications of its recently enhanced VM- I credit-cardsized control computer on its Stand. In addition to the controller itself N4icro-Robotics also had on display application boards, development kits and industrial I/O interface cards designed to work with the VM- I controller. A brand new staffer kit also made its debut at mtec 2005.

New infrared temperature sensor requires no cooling in high ambient temperatures
Raytek, a leading worldwide provider of infrared thermometry, introduces its new MIH non-contact infrared temperature sensor (Measurement Range: minus 40deg to 600degC), which can be installed in environments with ambient temperatures up to 180degC without the need for costly water or air cooling accessories. Such cooling accessories not only add installation and maintenance costs, they can leak and contaminate products, or condensation produced by cooling can obscure the sensor's field of view and interfere with measurement accuracy. In addition, the MIH sensor includes a Teflon coated cable to withstand exposure to harsh chemical environments.

We welcome press releases on new products and/or applications for inclusion as news on the Instrumentation Signpost which has a visiting public from throughout the world. See our stats page at http://read-out.net/signpost/stats.html. We may also use these releases in our print publication Read-out which is distributed every two months throughout Ireland.
These may be sent to us at signpost@read-out.net as text and with attachments pictures as jpegs.
Please note we have a spam protection system on all or mailboxes so an automatic response is sent to the first message from an unrecognised address.

New range of low cost high accuracy load cells
Transducer solutions specialist RDP Electronics will be launching a new highly accurate range of competitively priced load cells, ideally suited for research, testing, batch weighing and OEM applications at the show. These are exhibited alongside their world-renowned comprehensive range of displacement, force and pressure sensors including associated signal conditioning.
