mtec2003 - Review
Sensors
Measurement &
Instrumentation
12 February 2003 - 13 February 2003
The only national British event devoted entirely to instrumentation and sensors.
This is a nice tidy well managed exhibition with no pretentions. It knows what it wants to do and does it in an attractive way. This show has an atmosphere and attracts visitors - I was actually jostled in the crowd and it's a long time since I saw that happening at a show! I'm looking forward to the next show in 2004.Eoin Ó Riain, Read-out

New multi parameter loggers
Comark has extended its highly successful range of Diligence EV data loggers by introducing two new multi parameter models specifically designed to monitor the performance of control systems. The new models measure the 4 to 2OmA outputs from sensor transmitters used in automated processes and thereby monitor the performance of PLCs and similar control systems across a wide range of industry and process applications.
Test calibration and pressure.
Advanced melt-pressure measurement products
Gefran has launched the new M and W Series of Melt Pressure Transducers for use in the plastic, polymer and food industries. Through a consolidation of individual features, the new line of sensors grants improved performances both in terms of accuracy I thermal drift and immunity to noise and keeps a strict electrical and mechanical interchangeability with existing products.
New range of rotary torque transducers -
Sensor Technology Ltd announces their range of Rayleigh Wave Torqsense (RWT) transducers. Their experience of working with this relatively simple patented technology also means that it can now be embedded into OEM products where knowledge of torque is critical.
OEM applications, for torqsense include automotive, manufacturing machines, condition monitoring, tightening procedures, and monitoring and control of viscosity during mixing processes.
Ethernet-equipped controller offers network-adept platform for real-time applications
Io Ltd will show for the first time their novel new control module offering real-time control capability combined with Ethernet connectivity. Rugged and expandable, the module offers exceptional flexibility for implementing control and instrumentation in application areas including industry and aerospace.

Test calibration and pressure
High technology sensor and instrumentation manufacturer GE Druck exhibited a broad selection of new generation product developments. Featured were many applied advances in Druck technologies including silicon sensing, digital control and ruggedised packaging. Sensor exhibits include level and pressure transducers and transmitters with analogue, digital and smart outputs. Instrument exhibits range from handheld pressure, temperature and electrical test tools to fully documenting portable calibration systems. High speed pressure controller/calibrators and primary deadweight testers include products from Group subsidiary companies Ruska Instrument and Pressurements Limited.

High durability rotary sensor sets new standard of reliability for automotive data acquisition
Penny & Giles Controls has developed a new family of rugged sealed rotary sensors for the motorsport market. Designed for high reliability in extreme temperature, high vibration and shock environments, the new Control Plus series offers a range of innovative features which overcome the shortcomings of competitive products and set a new standard of reliability for the industry.
The Ketchup Probe! - The LSP 050 shown by Bourdon Haenni, uses the potentiometric measurement principle to continuously measure the level of any electrically conductive medium having a minimum conductivity of 1 microS/cm. Because of the unique electronic design, this transmitter is especially suitable for the measurement of tough, pasty or strongly adhesive media such as tomato ketchup and is unaffected by head pressure sup to lObar.
Non-Contact Temperature Measurement
Raytek UK/Ireland non-contact temperature measurement solutions on exhibit include the Raytek MP5O Thermal Imaging Line Scanner for high-resolution real-time thermal images of heated process surfaces. Also on display the low-cost Raytek MID (Miniature Digital) sensor featuring the industry's smallest sensing head, ideal for temperature monitoring in tight spaces within machinery or along a production line. New at the show is the Raytek PhotoTemp MX6, the first handheld temperature inspection tool to combine a precision non-contact infrared thermometer with a digital camera for enhanced inspection documentation at a price far less than a thermal camera. The MX6 photographs the measurement spot marked by the unit's unique True Spot circular laser sighting. Images are superimposed with temperature, location, time and date information. Up to 100 images can be stored in the unit and downloaded to a PC for incorporation into emails and reports.
Pre-assembled linear motor gantry simplifies higher-throughput positioning systems -
For the first time in Britain, Baldor demonstrated an innovative linear motor driven gantry which speeds and simplifies the building of ultra high throughput, precision positioning systems. The linear stage gantry provides a ready-built X-Y-Z assembly offering move speeds of up to 3 metres/second and resolutions to 0.1 micron, the introduction provides a short-cut to the realisation of the benefits of linear motors for machinery and automation GEMs in markets including electronics, semiconductors and fibre optics.
