Group chairman announced - Invensys Process Systems has announced that Hartmut Wallraf,
chief of technology and vice president for Europe and Middle East Africa operations, had been
elected Chairman of the Board of the FDT Group.
This is a consortium of manufacturers and process instrumentation vendors who have come together to
enable interoperability among diverse technology protocols.
New IR analysers for
biofuels - Quantitech is launching
two easy-to-use mid-infrared analysers for biofuels analysis aimed at production facilities and fuel
blending at distribution centres. The instruments have been specifically designed for on-site
analysis and can be operated by users having limited or even no knowledge of infrared analytical
techniques. The first - the InfraCal Filtometer - is a low-cost, single wavelength analyser that
is ideal for measuring the blend ratio of biodiesel in diesel fuel or ethanol in petrol. The
second instrument, the InfraSpec VFA-IR Spectrometer, is a spectral range analyser capable of
monitoring more than one component.
New blog
on Make2Pack and ISA88 aims to increase manufacturing efficiency - A new blog, hosted by Control Engineering, focuses on increasing
efficiency and profitability in manufacturing. Blog topics will center on the development and
implementation of WBF Make2Pack, ISA88 Part 5, and
related standards efforts. The blog, titled "Standard Profits: Make2Pack and ISA88," encourages readers to ask questions and
make suggestions to help the standard's development, and to offer advice on implementation and
gaining a competitive advantage.
Update automates work notification to improve maintenance productivity and
operational excellence - Emerson Process
Management has released the AMS
Suite Work Notification capability that uses the predictive intelligence in plant assets to
prioritise critical alerts, and automatically generate work orders to enterprise asset management
(EAM) systems such as SAP and MAXIMO for instruments and valves, as well as mechanical and process
equipment. AMS Suite is Emerson's family of best-in-class predictive diagnostic software
applications.
Improve measurement
accuracy and reliability - National Instruments
has announced the release of LabVIEW SignalExpress 2.5, the interactive measurement software that
simplifies the acquisition, analysis and presentation of data from hundreds of data acquisition
devices and instruments. Built on LabVIEW graphical programming, it delivers an easy-to-use,
drag-and-drop environment for configuring data-logging and instrument control applications. The
latest version of LabVIEW SignalExpress introduces several performance improvements including a
Project Analyser to help engineers and scientists identify and address common measurement mistakes.
It is also available in fully localised French, German and Japanese versions.

New headquarters for
interlocking specialists - Work has started on a new £3 million state of the art

Underscoring its commitment to the mobile market, QuickLogic has added a SPI
(serial peripheral interconnect) Host Controller to its customer specific standard product (CSSP)
functional library. The SPI interface gives mobile device designers a low pin-count alternative to

minimize parts count and cost in heating applications - Vishay Intertechnology has announced a
new series of self-regulating PTC (positive temperature coefficient) thermistors for heating
applications.
Certified Solid State Relays! -
Crydom has produced the first solid state relays
available on the market with UL approved short-circuit current ratings (SCCR). These relays
facilitate industrial control panel builders' efforts to comply with the new article 409 from NEC
and the latest version of UL508A, both request SCCR marking, by providing them with pre-approved
ratings for SSR/fuse combination.

Modbus I/O Units for easy SCADA Integration - Available from Audon
Electronics is a new range of low-cost Modbus based remote IO units which provide a simple way of
integrating analogue or digital signals to supervisory SCADA systems. There are several models in
the range from voltage, current, thermocouple and PT-100 inputs, voltage and current outputs and
digital and relay I/O. Supplied with the IO Studio configuration software. The optional DAQ Studio
software can be used to provide a data acquisition, trending and alarm management interface for the
PC. Also compatible with all SCADA packages such as DAQFactory.
Wireless communications
for automation GE Fanuc Intelligent
Platforms has announced the introduction of its new TranSphere Wireless communications products
for automation needs. This offering includes extended range IP networking, wireless IP/Ethernet
connectivity, and Ethernet and serial communications radio modem solutions. GE Fanuc Intelligent
Platforms is also introducing the TranSphere Wireless remote I/O for analog and discrete I/O
signals.
- Integrating information across the enterprise - They also announced that VisiconX, an enterprise-wide analytical tool, is now available for Proficy
HMI/SCADA CIMPLICITY. VisiconX enables users to easily obtain and group data from any relational
database in the operation and turn it into information that will be valuable to everyone in the
organisation.
New
software enables multiphase flow simulation from Microsoft® Excel - The SimSci-Esscor
unit of Invensys Process Systems has announced a new version of its PIPEPHASE simulation software
program that can use the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet as an interface. PIPEPHASE version 9.2 users
can now drag and drop multiphase flow model parameters such as wellhead pressures, Gas Oil Ratios,
PVT data, pipeline diameters, and IPR constants, directly into Excel spreadsheets.
Wireless integration path agreed - During a series of meetings
held in conjunction with ISA EXPO 2007 (Our
Review), the ISA100 Wireless Systems for Automation standards committee outlined an approach to
accommodate and eventually integrate the WirelessHART standard and the ISA100 standard. The
approach will attempt to accommodate the HART 7 wireless protocol in release 1 of the ISA100.11a
standard through a dual-gateway architecture, followed by a potentially more integrated approach in
release 2.

with external configuration memory - Harting has extended its family of industrial Ethernet switches to include a unit
with an external configuration memory.
RoHS compliant
high-density filtered D-Sub connector - Targeted specifically at the commercial market, this
new connector from Cinch features a more dense contact arrangement, resulting in substantial space and weight
savings for design engineers. Compared to the equivalent standard density D-Sub connectors, a
savings of 40% in space and over 100% in weight is achieved.

New spectroscopy system
for catalyst research - The new #2000-A-C from AABSPEC is a new spectroscopy system optimized for catalyst research. Reduced
internal volume, special sample probe, reduced gas phase pathlength, special ported end plate, all
combine to provide an advanced facility for catalysts. In addition to high temperature, high
pressure/ vacuum transmission spectroscopy, the new system provides a range of other facilities.
These include low temperature spectroscopy, specular reflectance, large angle reflectance and Raman
spectroscopy.

PAM to grow 10.8% annually... - The worldwide market for Plant Asset

Global distribution agreement - Digi-Key Corporation and Z-Wave(R) developer Zensys announced today the signing of a global
distribution agreement. Digi-Key is one of the world's fastest growing distributors of electronic
components, shipping products to more than 140 countries, and is also one of the newest members of
the Z-Wave Alliance, a consortium of 170 companies dedicated to establishing Z-Wave as the standard
in wireless control and automation.
What Does the Future Hold for Non-Ethernet Based Industrial Device Networks? -
Future prospects for traditional, non-Ethernet based industrial device networks look
increasingly narrow as industrial Ethernet continues its migration into lower levels of the
industrial automation hierarchy. Growth in shipments of traditional industrial device networks will
continue through the end of the decade, but the rate of growth will slow from the double-digit
annual gains witnessed to date, to more modest single-digit increases. The worldwide market for
traditional industrial device networks is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR)
of 13.7% over the next five years. The market totaled over 12 million nodes shipped in 2006 and is
forecasted to total close to 23 million nodes in 2011, according to a new ARC Advisory Group study - "Industrial Device Networks Worldwide Outlook".
Remote configuration of
PLCs - IntelliCom has announced the NetBiter® Serial Server that provides remote configuration of Rockwell PLC's over
Ethernet, LANs or the Internet. The gateway makes a transparent connection between standard RS Logix
500 Windows tools and the Rockwell PLC's; ControlLogix, MicroLogix, CompactLogix, SLC-500 and PLC-5
using DF1. The system works completely transparent and does not affect with the installation in any
way. This provides instant access to remote installations 24/7 without traveling to the sites, which
saves time and money.
Enhanced version of safety
instrumented system - Yokogawa has
launched an enhanced version of the ProSafe-RS safety instrumented system, ProSafe-RS R1.03. To meet
the latest safety instrumentation needs of the oil, petrochemical, and other industries, the remote
optical communications capability has been enhanced and a digital output module and a simulation
test function have been added to this new version.
Drives and Motors Provide More Intelligence to CANopen -
All Technosoft intelligent drives and motors now support CANopen communication. Embedding motion
control, drive and PLC functionalities in a single compact unit, these drives cover all type of
brushless, DC, linear or step motor applications from 25 W (45 V, 0.5 A) up to 3 kW (325 V, 10 A).
The motors (brushless and stepping) integrate power electronics, controller, position sensor and
interface in one compact unit with basic local digital and analog I/O signals. These new generations
of Technosoft products offer the powerful CANopen communication option to motion automation builders

Instrumentation is extended by a robust stainless steel bimetal thermometer specially designed for
the heavy industry. This every angle version measures temperature ranges from -70°C up to
600°C.
Three-channel constant-current
LED driver with PWM brightness control for large display applications - The new A6281 from
Allegro MicroSystems Europe is a three-channel constant-current LED driver IC with an on-chip
oscillator for simple programmable brightness control. It is ideally suited to driving clusters of
red/green/blue (RGB) LEDs in applications where the cluster forms one pixel in a large display or a
lighting fixture.
New versions of
precision dosing pump - ProMinent Fluid
Controls, has announced an automatic deaeration version of its popular Delta precision dosing
pump, together with two new models for the continuous dosing of volumes as small as 5 ml/hr. The new
deaeration facility makes the Delta the only pump of its kind which can automatically degas when gas
is detected in the pump head. This makes it ideally suited to dosing fluids which easily outgas,
such as sodium hypochlorite.

major upgrade to the 375 Field Communicator provides significant benefits to both new and existing

and Foundation fieldbus devices. By decreasing the startup time and increasing the battery life
through improved power management, users can be assured that their 375 Field Communicator is always

fieldbus devices and an expanded fieldbus user interface.
One piece solar
connector is field-mountable - The Lapp
Group has introduced a new connector designed specifically for use in solar power-based
installations. The Epic® Solar is a field-mountable connector developed to make the task of
installing photovoltaic systems much simpler. These connectors provide a quick and error-free method
of connecting solar cables on site. The connector consists of a single, complete component with no
parts to lose or fit incorrectly. Installers need only crimp the cable and connect the wings for a

testing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics - Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced that the China Doping Control Center
(CDCC) has selected Thermo Scientific instruments and software for its sports testing program at the
29th Olympic Games in Beijing.
Switch probe for rear
assembly - Peak Test Services has
introduced a new version of the P201/G switch probe that has been specially designed for rear
assembly in applications such as multi-level modules and fixtures.
Intelligent extruder plans
its own growth! - A bench top extruder developed at Bradford University is able to collect
data about its own operation and to determine a wide range of characteristics of the material with
which it is working. Most of the intelligence is provided via a digital TorqSense torque sensor,
from Sensors Technology, which uniquely collects data
via a radio signal rather than being hard wired to the extruder, and passes it onto a computer for
analysis.
New mini accelerometer
targets light structures - The new Type 8278A miniature, high temperature, high impedance
accelerometer from Kistler Instruments is
designed for use in testing lightweight structures with minimum mass loading. The single axis sensor
comprises an annular shear piezoceramic element in a hard-anodised aluminium housing. At only 700
mg, the Type 8278A is light but highly robust, it operates over a wide temperature range of
minus75°C to plus 180°C and can survive mechanical shocks of up to 10,000g.
New feature boosts
level measurement reliability even in complex, demanding tank or open channel installations -
Emerson Process Management
has announced new software for its family of Mobrey MSP non-contacting ultrasonic level
transmitters. The upgrade features an enhanced false echo rejection capability which allows reliable
operation in complex infrastructures where tanks and channels contain static obstructions such as
stay bars, ladders or weld beads.

Joint
effort to help engineers and scientists easily create integrated T&M solutions - National Instruments and Anritsu have announced a joint effort to develop
LabVIEW Plug and Play and LabWindows/CVI instrument drivers for Anritsu test instruments. The
companies are working together to make it easy for engineers and scientists to combine the popular
LabVIEW graphical development platform and the proven LabWindows/CVI ANSI C integrated development
environment with Anritsu RF and wireless communications test instruments.

2.2A(IOUT), 2.8MHz Step-Down DC/DC Converter in 3mm x 3mm DFN Linear Technology has announced their LT1938, a 2.2A, 25V step-down switching
regulator packaged in a 3mm x 3mm DFN. The LT1938 operates within a VIN range of 3.6V to 25V, making
it ideal for 12V and unregulated wall transformer inputs. Its 3.1A internal switch can deliver up to
2.2A of continuous output current at voltages as low as 1.265V. Switching frequency is user
programmable from 300kHz to 2.8MHz, enabling the designer to optimize efficiency while avoiding
critical noise-sensitive frequency bands. Its 3mm x 3mm DFN-10 package and high switching frequency,
which keeps external capacitors and inductor small, provides a very compact, thermally efficient
footprint.

unit for use with 4-20mA or HART® compatible transmitters - Emerson Process Management has introduced the Rosemount 3490 Series of Universal
Control Units, designed to provide comprehensive control functionality when used with any 4-20mA or
HART compatible transmitter. The 3490 Series Control Units configure transmitters and provide
display, calculations, logging and control outputs. The series comprises the 3491 Standard Control
Unit, 3492 Differential and 3493 Logging Control Units. The 3490 Series is user friendly and has the
capability to perform a variety of calculations on the signal received from the transmitter, for
example, translating level into volume or flow. All variants feature a multi-function back-lit

Operator training simulator project at one of the largest U.S. LNG terminals -
Invensys Process Systems has been awarded a contract to provide an integrated training simulator for
control room operators at the Trunkline LNG terminal in Louisiana (US). The SimSci-Esscor
operating training simulator will be used for the initial training or retraining of control room
operators, operating supervisors and other equipment operators. The simulator comprises training on
all aspects of terminal operations, such as start-up, shutdown, normal operation, and possible
terminal process upset situations.
Funding
secured for vibration energy harvesting generator - Perpetuum, the manufacturer of vibration energy harvesting devices, has
completed a £5 million funding round backed by Environmental Technologies Fund (ETF), Quester,

New software gives fast access to graphic recorders -
Eurotherm has
released a new visualisation package Eyris™ to provide an easy to
configure and simple to use PC package accessing their Data
Management 5000/6000 series graphic recorders.
The new Eyris for Data Management software package from
Invensys provides a builder environment to connect to the recorders and
a browser window for direct access to the recorder bridge sessions.
Communications computer business acquired - Emerson and Motorola, have
announced that the two companies have entered into a definitive
agreement under which Emerson will acquire Motorola's Embedded
Communications Computing (ECC) business for $350 million in cash.
Motorola's ECC business, which had 2006 revenue of approximately $520
million, will strengthen Emerson's position in the $6
billion-and-growing merchant embedded computing industry. Upon
completion of the transaction, Motorola's ECC business will become part
of Emerson Network Power. The transaction is expected to be completed
by the end of the calendar year and is subject to customary closing
conditions and regulatory approvals.
System integration with safety systems - Emerson Process
Management has recently integrated the DeltaV process control system
with HIMA H41q and H51q safety systems using Mynagh's VIM over Modbus
TCP/IP protocol. This integration is significant because the Modbus
TCP/IP protocol allows for faster and more voluminous data transmission
between HIMA safety systems and DeltaV process control systems using
MYNAH's VIM. The VIM provides the Modbus TCP/IP Master interface
to simulate the DeltaV serial cards, providing the speed of an Ethernet
network with the reliability of Modbus.
