High performance graphics module for demanding imaging applications - GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms has announced the Telum™ 3001 Graphics Adapter AdvancedMC. Designed to deliver substantially more graphics performance and functionality than has previously been available for MicroTCA and AdvancedTCA, the Telum 3001 includes such advanced features as provision for dual digital and/or analog displays, very high resolutions and support for 'ganged' (configuring multiple graphics cards on the same platform) operation, giving even greater performance.
Research program to improve dynamic behavior of embedded systems - To deal with the increasing dynamism in (networked) embedded systems, IMEC is launching a new research program. This program will focus on moving the management of the system's resources from the design phase to runtime software solutions. The resulting embedded systems will be more flexible and efficient, and will have a shorter time-to-market. Systems that would profit from such improved dynamism are, for example, multimedia appliances, from servers to mobile devices, standalone or connected in a video processing network.
Process Chemical Seals for High Temperatures - The process chemical seals D900 series offered by Baumer (product segment Process Instrumentation) are suitable for high temperature applications up to 400°C. They have been developed especially for the chemical and petrochemical industry in order to protect pressure transmitters against aggressive media. The devices are available with various types of ISO- and ANSI-compliant flanges.

signed a multi-million dollar contract with Waha Oil Company, a
Libya-based oil producer, to provide comprehensive automation upgrades
at the company's oil fields in Gialo, Waha, Dahra, Samha and Defa (Lybia).
- Earlier this year, Georgia Power opened a brand new $2 million training facility on the campus of Coosa Valley Technical College in Rockmart, Georgia (US). The Georgia Power Technical Education Center is the result of a partnership between utility provider Georgia Power, parent company Southern Company, Coosa Valley Technical College, and equipment and technology providers, including ISA, whose portable training units are featured in the center.
Connector passes 'rugged' test -
The Harting MicroTCA™ connector has successfully passed the latest tests
established by the PICMG Group for the 'Rugged MicroTCA' PICMG
specification. The Harting con:card+ connector for MicroTCA backplanes and the plug
connector for AdvancedMC modules passed the vibration sine and shock test of
the MTCA.1 'Rugged Air Cooled' specification without contact interruptions.

Single inductor high efficiency synchronous buck-boost controller operates from -55°C to 125°C - Linear Technology Corporation announces a new high reliability (MP) grade version of the LTC3780, a very high efficiency synchronous buck-boost switching regulator DC/DC controller that operates from input voltages above, below or equal to the output voltage. High power buck-boost circuits typically rely on transformers or two DC/DC converters, one for step-up (boost) and the other for step-down (buck) conversion. The LTC3780MP operates using a single inductor and can deliver output power up to 150W with a single device. Higher power can be achieved when multiple circuits are paralleled. With 4-switch synchronous rectification, it can deliver efficiencies up to 98%.

New Software for EDD Engineering Tools
PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) is providing its members with two new powerful software components for distributing device descriptions based on EDDL. These include an EDD import library, which supports the development of IEC-compatible EDDs for PROFIBUS PA devices and an interpreter software for these EDDs for use in engineering tools.

New sensor simulator -
PCB Piezotronics has introduced a new ICP® sensor simulator Model 401B04 ICP® sensor simulator installs in place of an ICP® sensor and accepts test signals from a voltage function generator. This product allows test engineers to make sure the entire measuring chain consisting of cable, ICP® or IEPE signal conditioning, and data acquisition system is set up properly and ready to take measurements; which is especially important when the cost of running a test is very expensive.

The device uses normal vibration created by machinery as a source of free green energy, converting it into useable electrical current that is reportedly sufficient to power complete wireless sensor nodes, micro processors, and 802.15.4 transmitters.

Increasing business necessitates a director of sales - We like to hear about business expansion these days! Canary Labs announced today that Jack Wilkins has been appointed Director of Sales, a new position. Gary Stern, president of Canary Labs, says that business has been increasing, and the company needs someone with experience in marketing process historians. "We now have more than 10,000 customers in 24 countries around the world," said Stern. "Jack has extensive experience with GE Fanuc, where he was the global product manager for GE Fanuc's Proficy Historian and Web Based visualization software, so we are confident that he will help us to continue to grow."
New production lines for award winning and iconic automobiles -
The ease of installation and commissioning of new production lines at the AutoAlliance car plant in Flat Rock Michigan were early benefits of the adoption of CC-Link networking technology at the heart of the automation system. And more was to come, with this proven, high speed network proving the ultimate in reliability, particularly when compared with other network options.
The AutoAlliance facility in Flat Rock manufactures both the award-winning Mazda 6 and the mighty Ford Mustang, one of the icons of the Ford marque. The plant produces over 1200 vehicles every day, using the most up-to-date automated assembly technologies. Over 400 robots are used to make more than 6,000 body welds on each vehicle; while a further 61 robots and ten automatic paint machines apply seals, sound deadening material and any one of 24 paint colours to each vehicle.

Control engineering tool and PLC software platform -
PhaseBuilder is a Control Engineering tool and PLC Software Platform by Logicon that enables a Process Control System (PCS) to be automated by an Object Oriented technique. A system is divided into Units (Vessels & Lines) and Devices (Instruments, Valves & Motors) from a Process & Instrumentation Drawing (P&ID). They are addressed, configured and detailed in the PhaseBuilder tool. Phases are then generated incorporating the predefined Units and Devices. Conditions are declared, Tasks are generated, Alarms are configured, Steps are developed and Recipes parameterised.
New control module extends the benefits of integrated pneumatic actuators and controls to conventionally wired applications - Emerson Process Management has a new FieldQ™ control module for use in conventionally wired applications. New models expand applications for OTDR family - Six new models have been added to the Yokogawa AQ7275 Series of optical
time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs), extending its range of applications to
cover virtually all metro, access and core networks as well as FTTH (fibre
to the home) and PONs (passive optical networks).
Wireless and Ethernet data acquisition platform expanded - National Instruments has announced six new wireless and Ethernet data acquisition modules and two ingress protection (IP) enclosures for remote monitoring and control in harsh environments. The new modules combine high-voltage digital I/O and IEEE 802.11b/g (Wi-Fi) or Ethernet communication to remotely monitor and control actuators such as pumps, valves and relays. Engineers and scientists can use these and other NI Wi-Fi or Ethernet devices with the NI 9921 and NI 9922 IP enclosures to protect their equipment from dust particles and splashing water or rain in outdoor or industrial environments.

Substantial increase in orders forseen in European nuclear market -
The number of aging power plants in Europe has given rise to an increasing need for the construction of new plants. An estimated 300GW of capacity needs to be added in Europe by 2020. Additionally, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), emissions regulations will tighten in 2013 as it enters Phase III. Facing these circumstances, nuclear power surfaces as an attractive option in carbon-constrained Europe, and it is expected that nuclear energy will be back on the agenda for many countries which have been quite reluctant to this generating option.

After years of stagnation, Finland got the ball rolling in 2005 when the construction of its third unit at Olkiluoto site began. It was the first new facility in Western Europe after a 15 year hiatus. Likewise, France is constructing its new Flamanville 3 reactor and is planning to add new units. In December 2008, Slovak authorities resumed construction of two units at Mochovce site and Bulgaria has started constructing at the Belene site. Sweden is overturning a 30 year ban on the construction of new nuclear power plants. Italy has decided to reintroduce nuclear power into its energy mix after its complete phase-out of nuclear energy resulting from a 1987 referendum. The country hopes to begin construction of its first nuclear plant by 2013. Moreover, the Britain, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Latvia, have all announced nuclear construction plans

Smart wireless technology enables online filter monitoring to avoid downtime - Emerson Process Management's Smart Wireless technology is enabling INEOS to monitor filters within polyethylene pellet transportation tubes. Blockages to the filters can lead to production downtime at its plant in Kö (D). The polyethylene pellets are "blown" through the transportation tubes using compressed air. The in-coming air is filtered to prevent any pollution of final product. The filters become blocked over time and lose their efficiency, which in turn affects the quality of the end product.
