Seminars through 2009 at locations around England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The seminars are
designed to offer electricians, electrical engineers and industrial maintenance technicians the
opportunity to gain hands-on experience of the latest, powerful, power quality tools and handheld
thermal imagers. All seminars are based around real case studies: no previous experience is
necessary. The programme can be viewed by visiting their site and clicking
on Events/Seminars. At each location, the Power Quality and Thermal Imaging seminars run
consecutively for half a day each, at a cost of £50 for one seminar or £75 for both.
New surface-mount
ambient light sensing photodiode - Vishay Intertechnology has broadened its optoelectronics
portfolio with the introduction of a photodiode-based ambient light sensor in a compact 0805-sized
surface-mount package, featuring a small 0.85-mm profile and simple 2-pin connection. The new
TEMD6200FX01 reacts to light like the human eye to allow automatic control of LCD brightness and
keypad backlighting and to enable a number of advanced automotive driver comfort and safety
features.
Linear actuator drives
innovation into lab mixers - Even the most conservative industries can be won over by
design innovations, as high shear mixer maker Silverson discovered when sourcing difficulties
encouraged it to rethink the only standard product its in entire range. Silverson has adopted a
Hoerbiger-Origa linear actuator as the lift mechanism on its laboratory scale high shear mixer,
replacing a complex chain drive built in-house with an out-of-the-box mechatronic unit.
New low cost
single/multiturn magnetic absolute rotary encoder with CANopen interface -
Variohm Eurosensor has released a new range of competitively priced high-resolution single/multiturn
absolute rotary encoders from German position sensor specialists Wachendorff Automation. The
innovative WDGA series features an on-board 32-bit processor and full CANopen interface that handles
the conversion of the encoder's rugged magnetic position technology to output 4096 steps per rev
(12-bit) at rates up to 1 Mbaud and with a multi-turn capacity of 131072 revs (17-bit). The WDGA
series is ideal for space limited applications as a feedback device for positioning systems
requiring long life and low maintenance - and unit pricing is estimated at 30% below comparable
technology.
IRIS railway industry certification awarded -
Harting has been awarded the IRIS (International Railway Industry Standard) quality certificate. In
addition to their connector range, the approval covers the design and manufacture of cables,
backplanes and backplane systems manufactured by Harting Integrated Solutions at the company's
Northampton site (IRIS Scope 12 and IRIS Scope 11).
IRIS, the international railway industry quality standard introduced in 2006,
places the world's most stringent quality requirements on all companies whose products are used in
the railway industry. This certification was introduced in order to further raise the quality
standards in the railway industry sector and thereby also increase safety in public passenger
traffic and freight transport.
Safety,
security and tracking rely on proper access to operator panels - Phil Burgert in Control Design says "Minimizing a machine
operator's interaction with his machine's panel display while still providing proper access is an
important objective of machine manufacturers and their automation suppliers. The goal is to keep the
operator on task of producing goods, not trying to discover and diagnose malfunctions.

devices for higher power ranges (C3H up to 155A) and servo drives for multi-axis applications (C3M),
the Compax3 range has been used successfully in a diverse range of industrial machine applications,
from packaging machinery to automotive test equipment. Changes made to both the hardware and
software platforms are designed to improve still further the ease with which the Compax3 can be
integrated into any motion control application.
A Series of Unfortunate Reports -
"Looking back on the 2008 numbers, it seems difficult to believe that we could be experiencing
such a downturn. The 2008 picture, while lacking the phenomenal growth seen between 2006 and 2007,
was still a very vigorous market." So says Larry O'Brien, the eminent analyst from ARC Advisory Group in his recent commentary "A Series of Unfortunate Reports".

'If you read the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing Report on Business, you are
probably already familiar with the Purchasing Manager's Index or PMI report that comes out on a
monthly basis that gauges whether the US manufacturing business is generally in a contraction or
expansion mode. According to their web site, "In February 1992, the PMI was developed by the U.S.
Department of Commerce (DOC) and ISM. The index, based on analytical work by the DOC, adjusts five
components of the Institute's monthly survey - new orders, production, employment, supplier
deliveries and inventories - for normal seasonal variations, applies equal weights to each, and then
calculates them into a single monthly index number."
Meanwhile, the German manufacturing sector is experiencing its biggest contraction in 12 years. The
Markit Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for Europe's biggest economy fell to 32.7 in December from
35.7 in November.'

the Virtual Reference option and OPTIFLUX 4000 flow sensors with diameters from DN 10 up to DN 300.
The devices are used in lines in which acids are treated, like for example with high grade steel
corrosives. Hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid and water are blended just before the flowmeter The
acids are measured at an operating temperature of 90 Degrees Celsius, under a pressure of 3 bar and
at a flow velocity of approx. 1,5 m/s.
|
Virtual Reference! Many chemical processes involve highly aggressive media. Their range of
electromagnetic flowmeters OPTIFLUX with a high chemical resistance, are ideally suited to measure
aggressive, toxic and abrasive fluids. Up to now for these applications expensive grounding rings
or grounding electrodes made of exotic materials, such as tantalum, nickel or titanium had to be
used.KROHNE now offers an alternative to classical grounding: virtual reference. This innovative and
patented concept does not require the installation of grounding rings or grounding electrodes.
