Hookers in the Bay

An American MórOne of the most impressive sights on a summers day is that of Hookers in full sail on Galway Bay!

These were originally working boats used along the coast where roads were few and far betwwen and carried everything from fuel (turf=peat) to other provisions to the three islands guarding the mouth of the bay.

ag Dún GuaireThere are four types of boat. The biggest called the Bá mór, (The Big Boat), followed by the Leat bhád (Half-Boat) and the smaller Gleotóg and Pucán.

Away Linn! The advent of motor powered boats and the building of better roads meant that these craft all be disappeared from use until the early seventies when the craft was revived and they were used more for recreation, racing etc and they are now once again a common sight in the seas around the galway coastline.

  • The bulk of these pictures with the exception of "The American Mór" were taken during the annual Crinniú na mBád in Kinvara in August 2004.
