Each of two measuring ranges can be adjusted to a particular value or signal curve in one hundred steps using either a dedicated remote control unit or directly by the machine's own PLC. When the measuring range is adjusted, the setting is stored by the integral electronics. The range can be switched remotely, even under load conditions, enabling very low forces to be accurately measured. Typical applications for the sensor are monitoring C-frame machine tools such as presses and automatic assembly machines, preventing overload of mechanical presses, quality control of riveting, clinching and resistance spot welding processes and detection of tool breakage or collision in a wide variety of machine tools.
RF measurement capability to GSM transmitter modulation quality measurements expanded - Keithley Instruments has added an option for making GSM transmitter quality modulation measurements to its Model 2800 RF Power Analyzer. The Model 2800 with GSM option is a high-throughput, cost-efficient solution that outperforms the high-end spectrum analyzers and communication test sets that are typically used to conduct RF power and transmitter modulation measurements.

Cool new thermometers measure global warming! - The range of portable thermometers and probes from Eurolec Instrumentation, the Pro-Com series, have been put under test in one of the harshest environments in the world. InMay 2004 an international climate research team returned from a two week test expedition on the Arctic Ocean in preparation for 'Poletrack', a 1000 KM climate research expedition next year. The purpose of the expedition will be to retrieve environmental data at the North Pole that will help in global climate research. Factors to be determined include ice thickness/movement, temperature and barometric pressure. Various sensors and probes were used in the recording of this data including a Eurolec portable thermometer, The PC Temp PT1, to measure snow temperature. The PC Temp PT1 uses a high accuracy PT1000 sensor which is particularly stable at low temperatures but can also provide accurate readings up to 200 C. Data from the expedition will be used for weather forecasts, and research purposes including the World Climate Research Programme. This programme which is also supported by The World Wildlife Fund for Nature and The European Space Agency."

1000Bar-rated compression tube fittings deliver over 10fold time savings for instrumentation users - Time-consuming cone-and-thread preparation can be a thing of the past for fluid instrumentation users now that Parker Instrumentation has completed its breakthrough family of rapid-assembly 1034bar (15,000PSI) compression tube fittings. With the release of 15 new component shapes, Parker Instrumentation now offers flow arrangements providing an efficient single-piece solution for virtually every common connection requirement. Using the familiar, industry-standard compression sealing technique - which assembles in seconds by simply tightening a nut - Parker's new MPI fittings save an estimated 20 minutes at least per connection, a time that probably equates to at least 10 Euros of labour cost in Europe. The new fittings are also inherently resistant to vibration, eliminating the additional cost of the vibration gland that is commonly used with cone-and-thread fittings.
