Manufacturing Excellence 2003
22 October - 23rd October 2003
ME 2003 Manufacturing Excellence and Asset Management in the Irish Pharmaceutical Industry The Manufacturing Excellence Conference organised by Emerson in Cork concentrated on the automation and control of modern pharmaceutical plants. Very important in the modern Irish economy. Novo Nordisk Engineering (Yes, from Denmark) presented the way fast track construction could use a modular concept (Lego) to shorten overall project completion times. Pfizer - from Ireland - described applying the same Lego concept with modules of plant and standardised interconnections, and modular fieldbus based software, to build the control scheme. This enabled reductions in the design time on multiple stream batch pharma production facilities.

Emerson's own Press Release
The Manufacturing Excellence conference held for the first time in Ireland was attended by over 130 people. Held in Cork it concentrated on the pharmaceutical industries which form such an important part in the development of the economy of the Munster (southern province) region though attendees came from the other provinces also.
Sponsored for 2003 by Emerson Process Management with contributions from Novo Nordisk Engineering A/S0, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals,DPS Engineering,Qumas and Wyeth Medica.
The two day conference comprised of a one day training course given in the Emerson local premises around the corner from the hotel. This included five short courses on DeltaV Primer, AMS Workshop, DeltaV Advanced, System Life Planning and Validation of Project Documentation. Speakers were mostly from Emerson personnel with the validation course from Kevin O'Leary, QUMAS of Cork.
On the second day two separate lecture streams were available. This allowed delegates to choose between speakers under the heading of Pharmaceutical Experience, or under PlantWeb tecnology. This latter was more product oriented and included various subjects such as "DeltaV Forward Direction" from Nick Taylor of Emerson, (who had been one of the speakers at the Read-out Forum), "Selecting Sensors for safety instrumented systems" from Phil Bond also of Emerson
Ole Abildgaard of Novo Nordisk Engineering opened the other stream with a discussion on Skid Vendor use in fast-track pharma projects. There were three presentations on installations in Ireland, Cormac Callaghan of BMS, Cruiserath, Alan Sheflin of Pfizers, Cork and George Skillin led a team of speakers on the huge Wyeth Campus in Grange Castle in Dublin. Aidan Harrington of DPS discussed manging projects in a changing regulatory environment.
