It leads with a story on the monitoring of water usage at the Cork plant of Glaxo Smith Kline where the installation of Rosemount¨ wireless flow and pressure transmitters on two new storage tanks has provided an opportunity to better understand water usage throughout the plant, to trial the wireless technology, and to create a network for cost-effectively adding new process instrumentation in the future. Water is an expensive commodity, even in Ireland and it is important for commercial enterprises to use only that amount of water which is required. Wireless too is an other area that many establishments are looking not only as a cost saving excercise but also as a method to measure where measurement was either very expensive or impossible to achieve.

Another area covered was the run-off water from an Airport well known to Irish travellers to Britain, Manchester Airport. Here Hach Lange analytical instruments are helping in the monitoring of the run-off water from runways and standing areas. Last winter for instance large quantities of de-icing liquid had to be used and it was important that waste containing this and other fluids be treaated properly before it was dispensed into the manchester Ship Canal.

Talking about manchester, that great city is host to the IDC Safety Control Systems Seminar in May. It features international experts Paul Gruhn and Clive Timms and promises to be Britains foremost gathering of safety control systems professionals this year.

In September, also in Britain but this time at Farnbourogh (of Air Show fame), a new exhibition is scheduled to commence. The Sensors+Systems Show is receiving enthusiastic support from exhibitors, well-known publications and distinguished engineering institutions, including The Profibus Group, the Institute of Measurement & Control, magazines Industrial Technology and Industrial Plant & Equipment together with the website Sensorland.com.

Talking about Ireland, Hanley Automation's user conference Manufacturing Automation 2011, will be held later in May at venues in Galway and Kilkenny. Looks like an interesting programmes is lined up here.

In Cork in late September, Industry Ireland will be co-located with the Southern Energy Show and the Facilities Management exhibition. In view of the interest shown in the recent ISA MIS Seminar (also reported on in this issue) it looks like this will be a good event for pharma, food and other process industries.

A sign of the new times we live in is demonstrated by the launch of the ESBI corporate blog site. This company utilises expertise gained in supplying power throughout Ireland to help those in other countries. Social media is a very cost-effective way to contact large international audiences.

Products described in this issue include iPhone dashboards from Intelligent Thinking; Michell RH sensors from Instrument Technology; HUBA DP cells from P.J.Boner & Co; Stahl EX lighting systems from Douglas Control & Automation; and submersable sensors from Baldor.

We report on the Alliance Partner Agreement between ABB and Instrument Technology in the process instrumentation range. This consolidates Instrument Technologies many years experience with many of the companies and products which comprise this important range. (In passing we might mention that the company has a vacancy for an internal sales engineer - 3rd level qualification and 3 years industrial instrument experience!).

Read-out as usual is full of news about people with reports from events and companies throughout the country and in the automation world beyond. Included in this issue are pictures from the very successful ISA Ireland Manufacturing Information Systems Seminar and tabletop exhibition held in early April. This was attended by in excess of 70 automation professionals in a very representative sample of process industry  in the country.

The next issue will include items on FACTORY AUTOMATION and articles and copy for this issue should be submitted by mid June.

It is possible to advertise both in Read-out, Ireland's journal of instrumentation, control and automation, which circulates to approx 2500 named automation professionals throughout Ireland, and on the Read-out Instrumentation Signpost, which is visited by up to 6000 visitors per week. Rates (in Euro, Pounds Sterling or US Dollars)

Read-out is generally distributed free of charge within Ireland but due to high distribution charges outside we regret a small charge is made for subscriptions in other countries. Subscriptions may be made using Paypal here. Our facebook "fan-page" lists most stories we receive even those not included in our printed publication.
