Unique Irish achievement heralded...ONG Automation, the Cork (IRL) headquartered automation company involved in providig engineering and integrating systems with leading makes of PLCs, Drives, SCADA and Instruments not only in Ireland but also in the Middle East, especially in the Gulf States. The were recently successful, uniquely in Ireland or Britain, in achieving full endorsed partner status in rocognition of its utilisation, skills and training investment in Invensys Wonderware products. This story is the lead in the current issue of Read-out, Ireland's journal of instrumentation, control, and automation. This had been announced at the Paris OpsManage 2011 in November.This issue the last of 2010 and first of 2011 has the theme of industrial communications. It includes details of the Status WTX wireless temperature transmitter system from Status Instruments marketed in Ireland by P.J.Boner. Elmar Engineering's VITALTEXT SMS text forwarding, archiving and management system is outlined also. Communications enhancements (ProfiBus, ProfiNet and telecommunications) to Siemens S7-1200 controllers are featured too. The expansion of the Achilles Industrial Cyber Security certification programme is marked with details of those of Emerson's smart wireless gateway, Invensys's Industrial Workstation and Wind River's VxWorks. The ISA 100 Wireless PlugFest was held in California (US) and details on this are included. The study in Dublin City University on designing and building a 3D optical surface profilometer capable of surface visualisation and roughness analysis to use in laser-processed surface characterisation is the Inside Front article. Future events are highlighted including Matrikon's OPC Technology Workshops scheduled for Belfast in April, National Instruments' Technical Symposium in April and various IDC Technology courses scheduled in Dublin and Cork throughout the year and also those scheduled on their web courses. The links to our reports on the OpsManage event in Paris (F), Emersons "Conquering Complexity" press event in Berlin (D) and the extraordinarily successful SPS/IPC/Drives in Nuremberg (D), all held in November or December 2010 are also included.
