Keeping level amidst the worm threat...

Douglas Control & Automation

ISA Ireland

The September October issue of Read-out is nothing if not topical in it's lead story which is on the ever-expanding story of the Stuxnet worm. Since the first notification arrived in the Read-out mail-box in mid July the story has grown from being one spoken of only in the automation journals, to the computer media and now into the main-stream press (including a suggestion that it was all caused by aliens!!!). The slant we have taken is that it is the first real attack on instrument control systems. Since writting this we have in fact learnt quite a bit more about its properties and foibles. (see our blog: Stuxnet - not from a bored schoolboy prankster!)

Level was the issue that we suggested as a topic to concentrate on in this issue and we were lucky enough to get a study on best practices in radar level measurement from Sarah Parker, who is Applications Manager with the Rosemount Division of Emerson Process Management.

Level products featured include Magnatrol's Eclipse GWR used to measure level "around corners!" These units are marketed here by Ntron.
Baumer's alternative to vibrating fork switches, which is based on frequency sweep technology where a frequency is swept by the transmitter and becomes subject to a phase shift depending on the medium.
The new range of miniature fuel, oil and coolant level sensors from Gill Sensors were also featured.

Of course level measuring products are not the only instruments or systems featured in this issue. Madgetech's little EggTemp designed to thermally respond to temperature effects the same way as an egg does looks like a real winner to live up to what it is cracked-up to be!
E+E's wireless sensors for temperature, humidity or CO2 are marketed by Instrument Technology, another one of our advertisers.
Eurolec has upgraded its CS series of calibration sources which avoid the inconvenience and time lost due to external calibration.
A new four-in-one pH sensor has been launched by Yokagowa which offers virtually maintenance free operation and long sensor lifetime in harsh conditions. The Sonatest new phased instrument for non-destructive testing (NDT) has been launced and is being marketed through Medrey.

Company news includes news of stockist Automation-Stock.com who can deliver from a large stock of automation parts and equipment from the main manufacturers, Siemens, Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi etc etc.
P.J.Boner & Co have added the Fluidwell range of products including batch controllers for a wide range of applications.
The ABB Drives Alliance have a new member in Advantage Control who market ABB's variable speed drives from their base in Co Down..
Douglas Controls & Automation have landed a large order for Stahl emergency light fittings with additional safety features. This order is for a large Cork-based Pharmaceutical company.

This issue also features items on training, events, including ISA's Automation Week, and people in the news.

The next issue for October/November will highlight Pressure measurements, gauges, meters, controllers, transmitters, switches etc etc. It will also have reports on the events of the end of September and beginning of October, Emerson's User Group Meeting and ISA Automation Week.

The recently opened facebook "fan-page" lists most stories we receive even those not included in our printed publication.
