Increased automation improves water and wastewater industry business processes

The principal headline on the 3rd quarter issue of Read-out emphasised the growing importance of the water and waste water industry in modern life. This is reflected in the amount of money being spent or scheduled for spending in this sector in the near and middle future not only in Ireland but throughout the world.

"Both developed and developing regions are seeing improving economies and thus are looking to either upgrade or install new water and wastewater treatment and distribution systems." says a report published recently by ARC advisory Group.

Another aspect is the frequency of flooding due perhaps to the phenomenon called climate change. A village in the English village of Oxton has installed a new high-tech river monitoring system that automatically issues text (sms) message alarms so that residents can implement flood protection measures. This system is to suplament the service by the national environmental services which sometimes, because of the swifteness and indeed heaviness of some rainfall, can be too slow in issuing warnings in some circumstances. Indeed, according to this article, 2012 was the second most wet year in Engkland since records began.

Douglas Control & Automation's Declan Lordan recently visited the Cork Institute of Technology and his impressions are given in our Inside Front article. The importance of training of automation professionals is very important in this era expecially in view of the shortage of engineers in the area, not only in Ireland but throughout the world.

This shortage is also alluded to in a report on a recent visit to Emerson Process Managements new headquarters in Baar (CH). In the course of one of the presentations Erik Lapré, their VP Services Europe, said "There is an urgent need of this expertese, not only in Europe but throughout the world." He pointed out the phenomenal progress made by his company in adressing the problem. "Education is important too to leverage the user company's investment in technology and the bulk of this education is application related."

Company news included reports of various milestones and events.
