Hach Lange launched a competition last year to discover where the oldest operational photometer in Ireland was. A unit purchased way back in 1985 was found still giving effective service in Wicklow county council. The user, Michael Whelan, was presented with a new up-to-date instrument and Hach Lange's Niall O'Brien made a note in his diary to contact Michael again in 2039 for his next replacement!...more!
Tired bridges!
The Ninteenth century has left a valuable legacy of civil engineering throughout Ireland and Great Britain, and no doubt elsewhere. One of the most visible of these are the many bridges used to carry road and rail traffic. This issue reports on an important research programme to help predict the future life expectancy of masonry bridges is being conducted at the University of the West of England using load cells and LVDTs supplied by RDP Electronics....more!
