  • 6.5 per cent Growth in Irish Economy - The 1995 Irish spending figures were released today, showing Government borrowing of IR627m, some IR186m below the budgeted amount. The current budget deficit was, however, IR50m more than planned. With about 40,000 additional people in employment, income tax produced much more revenue than expected. VAT receipts were also up substantially but Corporation tax was less than budgeted. Opposition politicians were critical, accepting that the economy was in good shape but accusing the Government of frittering away the benefits. Minister for Finance Ruairi Quinn was naturally pleased with the outcome which, he said, pointed to the economy growing by 6.5% in 1995.(4/1/96)
