Breaking new ground
BS Manufacturing has launched a cordless, gas-powered soldering iron and precision heating tool which delivers up to 135W of output. Called the Vulkan P200, it is fabricated using lightweight plastics, the product weighs just 110g and provides a light, easily-manipulated and highly versatile tool which can be carried on a belt or in a pocket. Ideal for field personnel or any factory staff that need mobility, it enables technicians working away from electrical power sources, or in difficult circumstances such as restricted spaces, to achieve high productivity.

Breakthrough
A new sensorless vector drive system for torque and speed control of induction motors has been introduced by J.J. Sampson. The Danfoss VLT500 provides a drive that not only determines the correct speed, but is more Òrock-steady than anything else on the market.Ó It reacts within milliseconds ensuring incredibly precise control.
The system, called VVCplus, supplies the same torque at all speeds, giving a full overtorque of 160% in the whole speed range, down to and through 0 RPM. Precise slip compensation also works in the whole speed range. With this product sudden load changes are never a prob-lem, and that means lower system costs.
Another feature is its ease of installation reducing costs significently. It comes in two types of enclosures with the smallest footprint available: a book-style version, 90mm wide and 260 mm deep (up to 3kw) and a compact version, only 220 mm wide and 160 mm deep (up to 7.5kw), fully utilising available space and incorporate most otherwise optional equipment as standard.
The setting up of the system consists in connecting to mains power, setting motor power, nominal frequency and motor voltage and away you go. In fact the VLT 5000 makes most adjustments itself.

Fast Stream Flow
A revolutionary new water flow monitor, the ELE International Flowstream, has been launched by Flow Measurements Ltd. It provides quick and accurate flow assessment in streams, rivers and irrigation channels, for flows up to 4000 litres per second. A cost effective, portable and easy-to-use on-site alternative to tradi-tional techniques is provided and it gives accurate readings even in irregularly shaped channels with turbulent flow.
The Flowstream is most effec-tive within a flow range of 1-4000 litres per sec. using a salt gulp dilution to achieve a typi-cal repeatability of better than 5%. A test usually lasts only 10-15 minutes, and can be carried out with no prior training by a single operator.
Following the measurement and recording of the background conductivity, a set amount of dis-solved salt (typically 500g) is introduced upstream from the probe. The Flowstream micro-processor then monitors and automatically calculates the flow measurement, displaying the readings in litres/sec.
After conducting an assessment the UKÕs Institute of Hydrology stated "No difficulty was experienced with the method or the operation of the instrument (and) results were very encouraging, demonstrating excellent repeatability."

Miniature accelerometer
Seán Gough of FGP tells us that they have introduced the FA 105 series of very low cost miniature accelerometers. Six ranges are available; 10, 20 and 50, 100, 200 and 500 G. The FA 105 accelerometers are accurate to 1%, are DC capable and are air damped, which gives them superior temperature response to normal oil damped accelero-meters. Normal sensitivity is ± 40mV. The units weigh 8 g and come in a rugged metal housing with M5 mounting threads. The FA 105 can replace much more expensive units in many common applications. Call him on 00 33 1 30796565.

Round the clock
Thanks to the unique clock face display panel, Eirelec's Viewlog Recording thermometers take the heat out of moni-toring temperature. Quick and simple to read, the clock face displays the current temperature and indicates whether or not correct temperature ranges have been maintained during the time in question.
Available for frozen, chilled and extended range applications, the unit takes a reading every two minutes and can record the maximum and minimum temperatures experienced during the previous three days which when recalled, are displayed in 30 minute periods. For more detailed analysis, the unit can be connected to a PC or hand held printer. If left permanently connected, it will automatically produce reports reports every 24 hours for accurate record keeping.
The instrument is ideal for use as a diagnostic tool to assess whether environmental condi-tions are stopping machinery or equipment from performing at their best. With its easily-read display, any problems become immediately apparent. Detailed analysis can be done at a later stage if required, using the software package available. Such records may also be used to show that the equipment is faulty and not the conditions.
Compact, versatile and low in cost this product series offers the reassurance that can only be gained via round the clock, continuous monitoring.

Dwyer Introductions
The new Turret Housing, popular for industrial applications, has been introduced with the Model 7100B and 7112B Spirahelic Pressure gauges. The gauge is en-closed in this rugged polycarbonate body and includes dual size 1/2"NPT male or 1/4"NPT female connector. The new housing permits bottom or back mounting.
In another development, they announced the release of their new ASME design Series 166T Telescopic Pitot-Static Tubes to accurately measure a wide range of airflow in hard-to-reach systems where permanent mounting is not needed. This device can be used at any extended length from 11.5"to 40.4".
