Indigenous temperature instrument manufacturer moves to new site

Many users of instrumen-tation and control equip-ment are surprised to find that there quite a number of instrument manufacturers in Ireland. Some are indigenous companies and others are subsidiaries of the familiar multinationals.
One of the longest established Irish manufacturers is Rototherm Ltd. Originally based in the Dublin suburb of Killiney, for many years the company operated in the Liberties area of old Dublin. Recently they has moved to purpose built factory in the IDAÕs Pearse Street centre. When Readout visited the site recently, Managing Director, Maria Keneany talked of the almost 50 years of the companyÕs existence in Ireland. ÒWe have a broad customer base with particular emphasis on the food processing and pharmaceutical industries. A large proportion of our output is exported either directly or indirectly.
ÒWe are well established as an exporter of bi-metal thermometers to original equipment manufac-turers particularly in heating, cooking and transport industries.Ó
To service the needs of their customer base they complement their own range by sourcing relat-ed product from approved suppli-ers. They offer their customers a range of product in the area of temperature and pressure measure-ment control and recording.
There is a greatly increased demand for the calibration and certification services they offer. Indeed they are currently extend-ing their range of calibrators by launching three new Hart hand-held calibrators. Two hand-held dry-well calibrators spanning tem-perature ranges of -10 to 300¡C and an infra-red hand-held calibrator with a temperature range of 33 to 400¡C. These are claimed to be the first and only hand-held calibrators in the industry and also the smallest calibrators available. They enable plant floor testing of sensors and thermometers.
Rototherm also offers a com-prehensive repair and calibration service on all temperature and pressure instrumentation.

New Dial Type Flowmeter

Dwyer , (Manotherm) has just introduced its new Series RMV Rate-Master dial type flow-meters for measurement of water flows in three ranges from 0-5, 0-10 and 0-20 GPM; all with ±2% of full scale accuracy and ± 1% F.S. repeatability. Rugged forged brass housing is standard assuring superior compatibility and the strength to withstand system pressures to 1000 psig (68.9bar).
The unique design employs a target type element linked to a flexible leaf spring which deflects in proportion to the amount of force generated by the flowing media. A magnet on the free end of the spring drives a mating magnet attached to the indicating pointer. The two magnets are isolated from each other by an internal wall so there is no direct mechanical linkage, enabling over-range flows to 150% of full scale - without damage - while practically eliminating chance of leakage. Unlike glass tube rotameters, these units won't shatter and they work great with dark and/or opaque liquids.
Three connection sizes are available; 1/2", 3/4" or 1"NPTF. These instruments can be installed in-line, supported by piping or panel mounted using hardware supplied. Optional Adjustable Signal Flag can be added to indicate a predetermined limit. RMV Flowmeters measure 5Ó diameter x 3-17/32Ó depth (127 x 89.7mm) and weight is 9lbs (4.08kg). Operating temperature limits are 20 to 200¡F (-6.7 to 93¡C).

Pressure Transducer

Ellison Sensors continues to innovate with the introduction of a transducer specially designed for the Water Process and Chemical Industries.
Featuring Silicon on Sapphire latest strain gauge technologies, this unit is now available in a tit-anium housing that ensures com-plete protection in aggressive media including chlorine, brine and trichoethylene solutions.
Silicon on sapphire or SOS as the combination is known, represents state-of-the-art technology and is regarded as being at the leading edge of current transducer design.
The resultant structure has a mod-ulus of elasticity exceeding that of stainless steel, it exhibits virtu-ally no hysteresis and provides first first class stability and re-peatability. The sapphire compo-nent insulates the silicon from the pressure medium, making the units suitable for use in tempera-tures up to 250¡C in ranges up to 1500bar and various analogue output options.

Multi-Variable Temp Transmitter

Two major new field mounted transmitters were launched recently by Rosemount Measure-ment (ProsCon & Williams). These units are for temperature measurement in industrial appli-cations. Both output conventional 4-20mA analogue signals and use the smart HART protocol for two-way digital communications over the analogue cabling enabling remote configuration and interrogation of device diagnostics, plus the ability to transmit digital output signals back to the control room. Both devices are claimed to have the best stability, ambient tempera-ture compensation and sensor interchangeability capability available today.
The model 3244MV can accept inputs from two sensors and use these either independently or to-gether. Automatic changeover from the primary sensor to sec-ondary can be configured to pro-vide an on-line Òhot-backupÓ thus ensuring plant downtime is minimised. Using HART the unit can also transmit four digital outputs including the two field measurements, plus differential temperature and terminal/ambient temperature if required. The other model (3144) is a single input device that transmits one output signal. Both devices can be configured by the user to accept inputs from virtually all types of industrial temperature sensor.

Water Treatment

Tuam Water Supply Scheme is the first SattTop (Alfa Laval Automa-tion) installation in the Water & Waste sector here. The purpose of the installation is to control seven filter beds with five VB2 valve boxes units each. The reason being the flexibility, distributed control and the lower installation cost.
The Tuam scheme is the largest such project in Ireland in the last few years. Engineered and programmed by Bowen Water Technology of Kilkenny, the installation consists of 5 SattCon 35Õs and 1 SattCon 05 to control the process in addition to the SattTop system. Also there are 7 SattCon OP45Õs working as operator displays for the filterbeds. There are 3 remote installations integrated in the system. Each one has a SattCon OP45 with I/O and they are operating over radio modem to the main plant.

Custody Transfer

A new version of DanfossÕs well-known MASSFLO mass flowmeter is called MASS 3000 CT. The two suffix letters stand for Custody Transfer and indicate the the meter has been type approved for custody transfer, which means that it carries the blue stamp of the authorities as ammeter used in connection with purchase and sale. This instrument features the same advantages as a traditional weight system: accuracy and custody transfer in kilograms. The measuring results are independent of pressure and temperature, which in many instances makes custody transfer in volume too inaccurate.
In addition the type approved mass flowmeter has the advantage, when compared with weights, that the custody transfer of the liquid is made directly in the pipe. Thus decantation is not necessary.
The MASS 3000 CT may be used as a supplement for fine tuning with a traditional weighing system. In other systems it may completely replace the traditional weighing system resulting in considerable saving in space since the weighing tanks would not be required. A mixing of two or more liquids may be made directly in the pipe system considerably speeding up the process. This approval adds to the Danfoss range of custody transfer flowmeters, available through J.J. Sampson & Son. Ultrasonic flowmeters and electromagnetic flowmeters are already approved for custody transfer especially in domestic water supplies.

Unique Scopes

Two differential oscillo-scopes - the OX802 and OX8022 - have been intro-duced by Metrix (PEMA). As far as we can tell these are the only differential Ôscopes currently on the market and they provide compre-hensive signal measuring capabilities in an integrated package.
Both oscilloscopes cover an analogue bandwidth of 20MHz. However the OX802 is an analogue only instrument, while the OX8022 is a combined instru-ment in digital mode at a maxi-mum sampling rate of 40MS/s. The instruments can operate in either normal or differential mode, the differential inputs providing inputs providing true floating measurements and channel to channel isolation.
The versatility of the instruments is amply demonstrated by their wide range of applications. The maximum input voltage of 500Vrms (IEC1010 Catlll), together with the differential input capability, allows for direct investigation of both single and 3-phase mains voltage signals. With an input attenuation of up to 200V/div, waveforms such as these can be viewed directly. At the other end of the scale, a sensitivity of 10mV/div provides the ideal facility for measurement of small signals, such as those from medical instruments and audio equipment, where ground loops may present a problem.
Triggering sources include CH1, CH2, ALT, LINE(net) and EXT, and there is an AUTOSET auto-matic configuration facility which matches the signals on input channels CH1 and CH2. Measurement includes AC/DC as well as AC signals.
Digital features offered in the OX8022 model include three different acquisition modes (ROLL, REFRESH, and SINGLE SHOT), a pre-trigger facility in steps of 1Kword (from 0 to 4Kword), a digital memory capacity of 2 x 4Kword and an RS232 serial communications port for easy interfacing with printers and PCs.
Each instrument has an 8 x 10cm CRT display screen with a fully equipped control panel and both instruments fully conform to the latest IEC1010 safety standards.

Compact Portable

If you want to make temperature, airflow or humidity measure-ments, the DM 101 from Aerkair (Safecare Technology - 052 42282) looks like a sound choice. It has been designed to make such measurements really easy both for people with no technical training, as well as technicians and engineers. The instrument uses dual purpose sensors to make simultaneous measurement of temperature and airflow, temperature and humidity and also pressure can be measured.
This flexibility has been combined with a range of features to make it an easy-to-use and practical environmental measurement meter. It will continuously store maximum and minimum values, and a series of results may be stored (up to 255) and the average calculated. A very practical feature is the ability to hold a measurement in the display, so that it can be checked later. It also performs self-calibration each time it is switched on.
There are just five push button control switches which have a positive feel click operation to allow use in dark conditions. Results are given on a large 4-digit liquid crystal display, but can also be loaded to a printer. The actual value that is displayed is indicated by a mark in the display. Other values are easily and quickly shown by pressing one of the arrow push buttons. The printer capability means that it can also be used on site to take a series of readings at programmable time intervals.

Zero Leakage

The introduction of more stringent environmental regula-tions to reduce vapour emissions into the atmosphere has prompted tank and pressure vessel engineers AVAL to carry out a funda-mental appraisal of valve seating performance Leaking valves are a major source of vapour emissions, and unless specific checks are carried out, leakage from inaccessible tank-top breather valves can go undetected for considerable periods of time.
With this in mind a 'dynamic seat sealing system' (DSS) to improve seat tightness of its series 200 pressure/vacuum relief valves has been introduced. Hanley Controls, marketing the range here, says that the system ensures that leakage rates remain at zero up to 90% of the setting for all valve sizes when using an elastomeric diaphragm - a considerable improvement on the general industry standard as defined in API Std 2521. Aval is so convinced of the effectiveness of DSS that it actually certifies seat tightness as part of its quality control documentation.
To ensure optimum seat tightness after instal-lation of each series 200 valve regular inspec-tion of all seats and diaphragms is recommend-ed and replacement if signs are apparent. However, to reduce maintenance commitments still further development of new forms of seating are being investigated.

InterBus, the Phoenix Contact sensor actuator bus, now includes two new function module versions, a four-channel counter module and a two-channel positioning module, according to PCAS.according to PCAS. In this way, on-site functions occurring frequently such as event counting and positioning with incremental encoders are performed decentrally by the Interbus sensor/actuator bus.
The counter module (IB ST 24 CNT) measures pulses and fre-quencies ranging from 0 to 90kHz with four counters and generates pulses in the 0.1 Hz to 10 kHz range with a 16-bit reso-lution. The sensors and actuators are connected with easy-use screw or spring cage terminal blocks.
Applications include industrial event counting, fre-quency and time measuring and pulse generation.
The positioning module (IB ST 24 INC/2) is suitable for con-trolled positioning with incre-mental encoders and for position detection and gate controlled counting. The control unit load is reduced considerably by decen-tralisation of control counting functions. Two incremental encoders with a 5V or 24V signal level can be connected. Maximum frequencies of 500 kHz can be processed. In the positioning mode 254 positions per incremental encoder channel can be stored on the module and recalled with the process date. When the position has been recalled the drive is activated and the end position signals intercepted directly via the digital inputs and outputs in the module.
