Historic Instrumentation Show - Belfast hosts first show in three decades.
Belfast is an unashamedly industrial city. This is the only part of Ireland to have been effected by the Industrial Revolution which transformed so much of the English Midlands and North and the parts of Scotland.
Based originally on the textile business and further augmented by shipbuilding industry the northern capital still boasts an unequalled position as leading industrial centre.
The Instrumentation Belfast Exhibi-tion at the Kings Hall Balmoral is the first industrial show to be held in Northern Ireland for many years. The number of exhibitors and the fact that there is a waiting list for stands points to the amazing resurgence in industry over the last few years.
Alex Janes, Marketing Manager with Trident Exhibitions, the organisers, told Readout that it has been such a success that all the stands are now booked out. "I am confident that the event will attract many visitors from all over Ireland," he added. Visitors to the show can expect to see products from many companies Irish and International from Belfast itself to as far away as Pakistan.
Instrumentation Belfast promises to be the most exciting event in the Northern Capital for decades.
Readout is hosting the Web site for this exhibition which may be viewed at http://www.iol.ie/~readout/belfast.html

Boiler Performance
Every important aspect of boiler and heating appliance perfor-mance can be accurately mea-sured with the new Tempest multi-function tester developed by Telegan and marketed here by CSL. This portable lets service engineers optimise boiler safety and combustion efficiency while minimising pollutant gas emissions.
Microprocessor-based and packaged in extremely rugged housing, this lightweight instru-ment is powered by mains or a rechargeable battery. It can be used with all types of boiler fuelled by natural gas, light oil, propane, heavy oil, coal or coke. Readings are displayed on a 4-line 20 character LCD panel and functions are controlled by membrane-switch keypad. Sen-sors are protected by an integral water trap and dust filter.
A single probe measures, CO2, CO, local and flue temperature and calculations of net tempera-ture, percentage carbon dioxide levels, percentage carbon diox-ide levels, boiler efficiency, excess air and CO/CO2 ratio. Write 4197
Recorder Breakthrough
Eurotherm Ireland claims to bring a new meaning to user selection with the introduction of 6 new recorders, making their 100mm series the most comprehensive in the world. The 4100 Series of three 1-4 pen Continuous and three 6-input Multipoint recorders offers an unsurpassed choice of features and prices to match requirement and budget, rang-ing from the OEM recorder to the complete data acquisition centre.
The 4101 with its analogue scale display and the 4102 with its large 3 colour digital display are aimed at monitoring appli-cations where ease of use and costs are key considerations. Main features include: ready to go operation with pre-config-ured isolated universal inputs for interface to all sensors; chart annotation; front access to zero and span; all in compact 144 x 144 x 236mm housing.
The 4103 Intelligent Recorder rounds off the range with a complete data acquisition centre - in the same compact housing - for validation traceability and quality documentation of indus-trial processes. The 4103 brings a new level of functionality to the 100mm recorders by incor-porating capabilities that Eurotherm Chessell pioneered on its larger 250mm recorders just a few years ago. The 4100 series can be easily pro-grammed by using Eurotherm ChessellÕs universal PC config-uration software.
The 4100 series of 100mm recorders complements Euro-therm IrelandÕs already im-pressive line of 180mm, 250mm, Circular and Graphics chart recorders offering an im-pressive choice from a world market leader. Write 4207
Ultra-slim DINrail IS interfaces
Elcon has launched a new sub-miniature galvanic isolator range, offering dual digital or analog channels in the form of ultra-slim 16mm-wide DINrail-mounting modules. This approach offers a capacity of 120 channels for every metre of DINrail, allowing automation equipment designers to build intrinsic safety systems of exceptional density, with up to twice the functionality prev-iously possible. Launched with a wide selection of interface types, the new barrier range is certified to CENELEC, CSA, FM, SAA and other world standards, and is fully EMC compliant.
Designated µD, the range offers digital and analog I/Os, includ-ing both loop-powered and floating supply options, and the capability to interface smart compatible process variable transmitters. Single channel versions are optionally avail-able for critical I/O functions demanding individual loop integrity, such as ESD (emer-gency shut-down) and fire and gas systems. The combination of DIN rail mounting and compactness makes µD ideal for a wide range of factory and machinery automation and control. Engineers can plug-on the intrinsic safety they need, allocating space for hazardous area interfacing purely in terms of the number of I/O channels required thanks to the product familyÕs uniform size and func-tionality - a facet which greatly simplifies system building. The industry-standard DIN rail-mounting form factor makes µD suitable for small applica-tions, such as providing IS for a single-loop controller, and for building multi-channel control system cabinets or panels to automate complete lines and processes.
A wide range of modules is available. Digital modules for contact/proximity switch inter-facing or driving solenoid valves/LEDs which include simple low cost fixed configu-ration types, and sophisticated user-configurable units. Analog choices include options for 4-20mA floating supply or loop-powered I/O, for either smart or dumb field devices. Users can choose from AC or DC-powered options, with line fault detection options. High channel density results from innovative circuit design using advanced state-of-the-art surface-mount components and design tech-niques. Rugged, easy-access terminals, provide six field connections for hazardous area devices and for the safe area side.
The advanced circuitry used in these barriers provides extreme-ly low power dissipation, ensur-ing the modules run cool despite their very high function-ality and potential close pack-ing density on a DIN rail. For a typical mixed signal installa-tion, power dissipation is an average of only 0.35W per channel. Elcon products are marketed by Insteco. Write 4210.

Temp Loggers The TL600 series is the first in a new range of user-friendly loggers from Eirelec. This compact single-channel temper-ature logger manages to com-bine a host of both vital and bonus features at a reasonable price giving exceptional value. The TL600 series will give years of service from its long-life industrial grade lithium battery, working out at less than 5p a day! Eirelec state that it is the perfect logger for monitor-ing goods in transit, storage, display or during processing. Write 4216.
Paperless Recorders from Honeywell
The new DGR100/150 family of paperless recorders from Honeywell provides an interactive window to a process through bright, high definition liquid crystal displays and pull down menus. Long term storage of process data is provided at low cost by 3.5in floppy disks.
The recorders are designed for many industries including chemicals, metals, petrochemicals, consumer goods, power generation and testing; as well as OEM manufacturers of furnaces, boilers and sterilisers. Write 4219.

Instrumentation Graduates
Some years ago we reported the establishment of the Degree Course in Applied Physics and Instrumentation in Cork RTC. This course has been remarkably successful and a recent survey of graduates shows over 93% are in full time employment and a further 5% involved in further studies.
Head of Department, Dr ƒamonn Cashell talking recently with Readout attributed this success to the relevance of the course to a very wide range of industries. The significant emphasis that the course places on the application on the application of physics and instrumentation within industri-al sectors, such as computing, electronics, chemical, pharma-ceutical and medical, enables graduates to secure employ-ment in these industries.
The course is further enhanced by the accreditation from the prestigious Institute of Physics which copper-fastens profes-sional recognition of the course. "The importance of this recognition for graduates who wish to attain chartered status cannot be stressed enough" says Dr. Cashell. He predicts continuing success for the course especially in view of the increasing demand for technically-qualified graduates. Write 4221.
