The survey of Suppliers in this issue is of suppliers of Flow Instrumentation in Ireland.

Flowmeter Market set to Increase - Coriolis Meters to outstrip others.
Micro Motion President, Gene Perkins predicted a 33% increase in growth in the worldwide flowmeter market during the next four years. Sales at present standing at Ir£1b look set to increase to between Ir£1.3b to Ir£1.4b with demand for Coriolis meters outstrip-ping all others. The market share of this meter is now about 14% and this should have increased to 20% before the end of the century. Micro Motion, a company within the Rosemount-Fisher Group, has recently launched its third significant product in an eighteen year history. The BASIS Coriolis flowmeter line offers direct mass or volumetric flow measurement with an integrally mounted transmitter and virtually no maintenance requirements. Integrally mounting the transmitter simplifies installation and reduces installation costs. The sensors have a flow accuracy of ± 0.3% of rate and ± zero stability. Temperature rating from -40 to 150¡C and connections from 1/4 inch to 3inch (The larger sizes are scheduled for introduction early next year). These meters are market in Ireland by the Fisher Rosemount Distributors ProsCon and Williams.

Directory Launched
The third edition of the Directory of Instrumentation in Ireland was launched this month
This "bible of the industry " was first published in 1991 and is completely upgraded every two years. This issue contains information on almost 400 companies and other organisations of relevance to instrumentation in Ireland. Over 300 product headings are included.
The Directory also lists a bibliography, a comprehensive acronyms dictionary as well as a Standards comparison guide. Order Information is available here.

Panametrics achieves Accreditation Dr. Frank Smith, Manager of INAB made the official presentation of the ILAB Accreditation certificate to Des Regan, Laboratory Supervisor with Panametrics.

Calibration Boost
Livingston Hire has boosted its range of calibration equipment to allow instrumentation users in a wide range of industries perform calibrations cost-effectively in-house.
WavetekÕs Model 9000 comes with a library of calibration procedures for most common DMMs, loaded on plug-in PCMCIA cards, and covers all the function found on a modern instrument including alternating and direct current and voltage, resistance, capacitance, conduc-tance, frequency, pulse width, duty cycle, logic level, temper-ature, and diode parameters. FlukeÕs versatile 702 Documenting Process Calibra-tor is PC controlled to offer the functionality to calibrate temperature (thermocouples and RTDs), pressure, differen-tial pressure, voltage, resistance and frequency. The Fluke 5500A Multi Product Calibrator handles frequency, capacitance as well as temperature for simulation and measurement of thermocouples and resistance thermometers, and simulation of DC and AC power as well as resistance.
These calibration tools are char-acterised by ease of use, and the capability for documenting cal-ibration procedures and results in accordance with the most demanding of quality programmes.
These units are available for both short and long-term hire for delivery usually within 24 hours of order.

Desirable Features
The new Red Lion Controls T48 Temperature Controller is a 1/16th DIN PID unit with a host of desirable features, according to Don Sharkey of I.T.L., All programming and parameter set-up is done via four front panel push buttons. It has two 4-digit LED displays. The larger Red display features the system temperature and the lower smaller (green) display featuring other selectable information such as setpoint, output power, deviation etc. Additionally a red LED annunciator panel provides a Ò%P(ower)Ó and ÒD(eveation)Ó indicators referring to lower display values, plus status of main control output, cooling output, alarms, and manual mode. It is easily programmed for 8 thermocouple types, linear mV and 2 types of RTD and linear ohms and features sensor break detection and error compensation.
Units can be stacked vertically or horizontally.

No Loops and Knots
PROMASS, the Coriolis mass flow meter from E+H permits the measurement of mass flow and at the same time the density and temperature of the liquid. It consists of a sensor and a trans-mitter which may be integrally or remotely mounted.
It is being supplied in either titanium or stainless steel at present although Zirconium and Hast C are planned.
PROMASS is used wherever mass is crucial: to mix raw material or fluids whose material properties are altered by processing. In addition to these purely quantitive determinations, the monitoring of product quality becomes more and more important. Here the density of the fluid is crucial as it is often a decisive factor in ensuring acceptable quality. Thanks to the Coriolis principle, quality is now be directly measured. The calculation of mass, density and temperature allows a determination of additional parameters such as volume flow, or the proportion of solid matter or concentration (Brix, Baumé). PROMASS, which includes an Ex version, is above all used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and the food industry, not least thanks to its safety aspects.
It provides the necessary outputs, (current and frequency) and interfaces (HART and RS485) to allow a connection to the various existing bus systems and networks.
The future of mass flow belongs to the autonomously working and remotely controlled measuring systems" according to Tony Donnelly of Flomeaco, " The devices user-friendliness during maintenance and cleaning play a crucial role. Promass meets all these preconditions in an almost ideal way, with its straight measuring tubes and field bus adaptable electronics."

EMC - the new Buzz.
Under EU law from the beginning of 1996 all electrical and electronic products placed on the market must carry the CE mark as a statement that they are EMC compliant.
This Electromagnetic Compatibility awareness is being addressed by ACK Engineer-ing who are the representatives of Schaffner EMC components. This company is a world leader in providing filtering solutions for EMC problems. Companies who need to comply with these requirements could have a chat with Andrew Keogh, who tells us that he does have some technical papers and detailed literature on the topic.

DCS on Windows NT
"A lot of Man Machine Inter-face (MMIs) products and PLC programming tools, are avail-able today on Windows. In contrast, very few DCS are avail-able on this platform.
"What is so positive about a system running under Windows?"
Lennert Martensson at Alfa Laval Automation poses the question.
"Well, you can say many positive and negative things about all operating systems (UNIX, VMS, OS2 etc) but no other operating system is as well spread and used as Windows by people in general.
"We therefore saw it as natural to give the user the very same interface he uses on his office or home PC." The main benefit has been the dramatic decrease in training time. Other benefits include openness towards other software and the wide range of tested hardware for Windows NT. Thus by changing their SattLine operating system to Windows NT they begin a whole new era with lots of possibilities.
SattLine is a system for distributed process automation, including the flexibility of a PLC and the integration of a DCS system. This is why they call their system a DCS/PLC system. The system family consists of a number of workstations and control systems which all co-operate in a local Ethernet network. The workstation can be used for software development, test, documentation, operator work, data storage, reporting etc.
