The title of Cardinal Suenens' book A New Pentecost? ends with a question mark. This shows that the effects of the Charismatic Renewal, (which for him was not a movement in the Church, but a movement of the Church itself) was not going to be obvious. How do we have to see the hope of this Renewal for the whole Church, which by definition is charismatic? What are the reasons that hinder its transforming power? We find the answers to this question in The Holy Spirit: the Life-Breath of the Church. It brings together in three volumes the texts that the Cardinal has devoted to the Renewal. For him, the grace of Pentecost was at the same time a gift of the Holy Spirit and of Mary to the whole Church. It is important to see all these aspects together.
With the support of Cardinal Danneels, the FIAT-organization has reissued in three volumes the works of Cardinal Suenens which are related to the Charismatic Renewal. The title itself is a message: The Holy Spirit, Life-Breath of the Church.
These books are as fresh as ever. Cardinal Suenens speaks with a deeply felt love for the Church. Before being a visible and sociological reality, the Church is a reality of faith, the Bride of Christ, the New People of the children of God. This vision of faith is the source of the Cardinal's optimism.
The Charismatic Renewal is not so much a movement as a 'being moved' by the Spirit. The whole Church has to be charismatic: she is a community of praise, of evangelisation and of brotherly love.
